Male pattern baldness is a subject that is often in the headlines. Let's face it most men don't want to go bald- sure some couldn't care less- but most would rather keep a full head of hair. Look at the male stars in Hollywood. Nearly all of them without exception have a great head of hair- Clint, George, Brad- they're all doing pretty well in the follicle department. Look at men of a similar age in "real life" however and many of them will have thinning hair. There are now effective treatments available- finasteride (marketed in the UK as Propecia) has had great results in significantly slowing down male pattern baldness. Scientists have, however, struggled to find the exact cause of the condition- perhaps until now. Scientists have published a report in the US journal of Clinical investigation that the problem lies with the stem cells that are responsible for making new hair- when they start 'malfunctioning' new hair ceases to be made. Doctors hope that the information will mean that they will eventually be able to 'cure' male pattern baldness as opposed to just treat it.
